Online Shopping is a convenient way to avail a range of products and services from anywhere. However, following precautions need to be considered while conducting transactions:
  • Use only secure websites:  Look for a padlock symbol "" in the right or left hand corner of your browser. Most often, the website address in your browser address bar will start from 'https'. E.g.              ​            
  • Shop online from reputed companies or trusted websites: Well-known companies are more likely to use the latest online security features for safeguarding online transactions.
  • Verify company reputation: When using a new website for purchases, make sure the company has a good reputation and read independent reviews and see if other consumers have had a positive or negative experience with the site.
  • Check seller contact details: Make sure the company you intend to purchase from provides contact details other than just an email address or online form. You should also be able to find merchant's physical address, phone number and shopping terms & conditions.​
  • Avoid purchasing from spam emails: If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't true! Be cautious of emails and websites that promise incredible or attractive deals. They're scams designed to make you click on a fake link, infect your computer, steal your personal details and take your money.
  • ​​Update your browser: Modern browser software adds a layer of protection against fake websites. Modern browsers warn you if you visit fake websites and it is harder for viruses to infect them. Ensure to update your browsers on a regular basis.
  • Be wary of pop-up windows: While you are on websites pop-up windows are common to appear. Don't click on any action buttons within a suspected pop-up window, including those requesting your financial or identification information.
  • Keep transaction records: Do not throw away electronic receipts or email confirmations for your online purchases. These are convenient in tracking the shipping dates and other details and also form an evidence, should a dispute arise regarding your online purchase.
